About Class Five (Standard V)

Class Five (Darasa la Tano / Standard V) continues the upper primary cycle (Standards III–VI) in Tanzania. It builds on the skills developed in Classes Three and Four and deepens pupils’ mastery of reading, writing, arithmetic and communication while introducing more advanced concepts in science, geography, history, languages and the arts through a competency-based curriculum prepared by the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE).

The main objectives of education in Tanzania are to enable every learner to develop self-confidence and a positive personality; respect Tanzanian culture, traditions and human rights; apply science, technology, creativity and critical thinking for personal and national development; uphold national values such as dignity, patriotism, integrity and unity; develop life and work-related skills; value productive work; address cross-cutting issues including health, gender equality and environmental conservation; and foster cooperation, peace and justice.

For Primary Education Standards III–VI specifically, the objectives are to develop reading, writing and arithmetic skills and fluent communication (including Tanzanian Sign Language and tactile communication where needed); master and appreciate Kiswahili and English (and at least one other foreign language where possible); appreciate Tanzanian culture and national unity while recognising other cultures; develop inquiry, critical thinking, design and problem-solving skills; promote moral values, integrity and respect for differences of faith; identify and develop talents, gifts, work skills, sports and arts; cultivate a love of work; use science and technology in learning and daily life; care for the environment and respect gender equality; and develop the ability to socialise in an inclusive environment.

Each subject is organised into main competences, specific competences and learning activities. Progress is assessed through continuous assessment, quizzes, projects, class presentations and end-of-term examinations.
