Main topics in the Form Four syllabus
Paper 1 draws on the whole secondary Physics course. The Form Four year focuses especially on the following areas:
- Waves — parameters, reflection, refraction, interference, diffraction, sound, resonance, beats
- Electromagnetism — magnetic fields, solenoids, Fleming’s rules, electromagnetic induction, Faraday’s and Lenz’s laws, generators, transformers
- Radioactivity — types of radiation, half-life, detection, applications and safety
- Thermal emissions — radiation, black-body radiation, thermionic emission
- Electronics — semiconductors, diodes, transistors, rectification, logic
- Elementary astronomy — solar system, stars, galaxies, space exploration
- Geophysics — Earth’s structure, seismic waves, geomagnetism, gravity, geothermal energy
Earlier forms also feed into the exam: measurement, forces and motion, energy, heat, light, electrostatics, current electricity and simple machines.
How to study Form Four Physics
A practical routine that works with any paper
1. Master the formulas and units first. Write a one-page formula sheet for each topic (v = fλ, F = BIL, ε = −N dΦ/dt, P = VI, etc.) and practise converting units until it is automatic.
2. Practise calculations every day. Physics is marked heavily on working. Always show the formula, substitution and final answer with units.
3. Use diagrams. Label ray diagrams, field patterns, circuit diagrams and energy-level sketches. Many marks are awarded for clear, correct diagrams.
4. Work topic by topic, then mix papers. Start with the free online exams and topical exams. When a topic is solid, move to full mid-term, terminal, mock and NECTA papers under timed conditions.
5. Mark strictly and list weak areas. After each paper, note every question you lost marks on. Revisit those topics with notes and another short quiz before the next full paper.
