About these lesson plans
These 50 Form One Computer Science lesson plans follow the competence-based planning format used with the new TIE curriculum. They move from the concept of computer science and computer systems, through hardware, software and safe handling, to installing software, organising files, problem solving, algorithms, flowcharts and pseudocode. Almost every lesson is 80 minutes and ends with a planned assessment.
What every lesson plan contains
Each plan uses the same seven-part header and a four-stage teaching structure:
- Header sections: class information (registered and present learners by gender), main competence, specific competence, main activity, specific activity, teaching and learning resources, and references.
- Teaching structure: Introduction, Competence Development, Design and Realisation, each with timing, teacher activities, learning activities and assessment criteria.
- Remarks: space for your reflection after the lesson.
- School details: a blank field for your school name, ready to complete.

| Stage | Time (min) | Teacher's activities | Learning activities | Assessment criteria |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Introduction | 10 | Greet learners and ask what comes to mind when they hear the word “computer”. Ask whether computer science is just about using computers. | Share first thoughts about computers and listen to the introduction. | Learners confidently describe the concept of the Computer Science field. |
| Competence Development | 30 | Explain the formal definition of computer science as the study of computation and information, including its theory, algorithms and practical implementation. | Write a simplified definition, explain it to a partner in their own words and ask questions. | Learners confidently describe the concept of the Computer Science field. |
| Design | 20 | Ask learners to draw a simple diagram or create a short slogan showing what computer science means to them. | Draw or create the slogan, then share it with the class and explain their interpretation. | Learners confidently describe the concept of the Computer Science field. |
| Realisation | 20 | Use portfolios, performance assessment, and questions and answers. | Present the portfolio, answer questions orally and perform tasks. | Learners confidently describe the concept of the Computer Science field. |
