SECTION B: Matching Item (5 marks)
Match each item in List A with the correct response from List B. Write the letter beside each item number. (5 marks)
| # | List A | Your answer |
|---|---|---|
| i | Haber process | |
| ii | Contact process | |
| iii | Frasch process | |
| iv | Bleaching by chlorine | |
| v | Oleum |
List B
- A. Permanent bleaching by oxidation
- B. Industrial manufacture of ammonia
- C. H2S2O7 (fuming sulphuric acid)
- D. Industrial manufacture of sulphuric(VI) acid
- E. Extraction of sulphur from underground deposits
- F. Temporary bleaching by reduction
- G. Manufacture of nitric acid
- H. Collection of chlorine over water
Correct matches (1 mark each): i-B, ii-D, iii-E, iv-A, v-C
- i. Haber process → Industrial manufacture of ammonia
- ii. Contact process → Industrial manufacture of sulphuric(VI) acid
- iii. Frasch process → Extraction of sulphur from underground deposits
- iv. Bleaching by chlorine → Permanent bleaching by oxidation
- v. Oleum → H2S2O7 (fuming sulphuric acid)
SECTION C: Short Answer Questions (20 marks)
11. Define a non-metal and state two general properties of non-metals. (2 marks)
Suggested answer and marking guide (2 marks)
- A non-metal is an element that reacts by gaining electrons to form negative ions / anions (1 mark).
- Any two: electronegative; oxidising agents; form acidic or neutral oxides; poor conductors of heat and electricity; etc. (1 mark).
12. What is allotropy? Name the two crystalline allotropes of sulphur. (2 marks)
Suggested answer and marking guide (2 marks)
- Allotropy is the existence of an element in two or more different physical forms while in the same physical state (1 mark).
- Rhombic (α) sulphur and monoclinic (β) sulphur (1 mark).
13. Describe the chemical test for ammonia. Write the equation. (2 marks)
Suggested answer and marking guide (2 marks)
- Hold a glass rod dipped in concentrated hydrochloric acid at the mouth of the jar; dense white fumes of ammonium chloride form. Ammonia also turns damp red litmus blue (1 mark).
- NH3(g) + HCl(g) → NH4Cl(s) (1 mark).
14. State the conditions used in the Haber process and write the balanced equation. (2 marks)
Suggested answer and marking guide (2 marks)
- High pressure (about 200 atm), moderate temperature (about 450 °C), iron catalyst (1 mark).
- N2(g) + 3H2(g) ⇌ 2NH3(g) (1 mark).
15. Why is chlorine collected by downward delivery? Give two reasons. (2 marks)
Suggested answer and marking guide (2 marks)
- Chlorine is denser than air, so it sinks and displaces air upwards (1 mark).
- Chlorine is soluble in water, so it cannot be collected over water (1 mark).
16. Explain, with an equation, how acid rain is formed from sulphur(IV) oxide. (2 marks)
Suggested answer and marking guide (2 marks)
- SO2 dissolves in rain water to form sulphurous acid, which is further oxidised to sulphuric acid (1 mark).
- SO2(g) + H2O(l) → H2SO3(aq) (or 2SO2 + O2 + 2H2O → 2H2SO4) (1 mark).
17. State two uses of nitrogen and explain one of them. (2 marks)
Suggested answer and marking guide (2 marks)
- Any two: manufacture of ammonia (Haber process); filling light bulbs / food packaging (inert atmosphere); liquid nitrogen as refrigerant (1 mark for two uses).
- Explanation of one, e.g. nitrogen is inert so it prevents oxidation of the filament or stops food going rancid (1 mark).
18. Distinguish between the bleaching action of chlorine and that of sulphur(IV) oxide. (2 marks)
Suggested answer and marking guide (2 marks)
- Chlorine bleaches by oxidation (nascent oxygen from HOCl) and the bleaching is permanent (1 mark).
- Sulphur(IV) oxide bleaches by reduction and the colour often returns on exposure to air / the bleaching is temporary (1 mark).
19. Write the equation for the reaction of concentrated sulphuric acid with copper and state the property of the acid shown. (2 marks)
Suggested answer and marking guide (2 marks)
- Cu(s) + 2H2SO4(l) → CuSO4(aq) + 2H2O(l) + SO2(g) (1 mark).
- Oxidising property (1 mark).
20. Name the two crystalline allotropes of carbon and give one use of each. (2 marks)
Suggested answer and marking guide (2 marks)
- Diamond and graphite (1 mark).
- Diamond: cutting glass / drilling / jewellery (hardness); graphite: lubricant / electrodes / pencil lead (soft, conducts electricity) (1 mark for one use of each).
