How Form Four exams work

The year before the CSEE, step by step

Form Four is the year before the CSEE set by NECTA. Exams follow the school calendar: Mid Term 1 in March, the terminal exam, Mid Term 2 (pre-NECTA) in August, and regional mock exams close to the national exam. Use NECTA reviews, topical papers and online practice at every stage. This page is part of our secondary exams hub. Looking for another level? Try Form Three exams or Form Two exams.

Term exams for Form Four

Mid Term 1, Terminal and Mid Term 2 (Pre-NECTA)

Term exams follow the Tanzanian secondary school calendar. They are longer papers that cover several topics and rehearse the real CSEE.

Mid Term 1 exams

When: March

The first formal Form Four assessment of the year. It covers the opening weeks of work, so teachers can find gaps early and students can recalibrate before the workload intensifies.

How to use it: Sit it timed, mark honestly and list the topics where marks were lost.

Compare your result with later papers to see growth.

Terminal exams

When: May, end of Term One

A comprehensive assessment of the whole first term. Terminal papers follow the format, length and language of the CSEE, so they show where you stand against the national standard.

How to use it: Sit it as the real thing: full paper, full time, no notes. Then sort each lost mark into knowledge, reasoning or time.

Mid Term 2 / Pre-NECTA exams

When: August

Set at or slightly above national difficulty. It covers the most demanding content of the year and stretches students while there is still time to fix weak areas before the CSEE.

How to use it: Use the result to build a revision plan. Return to topical papers for every topic that still costs marks.

Practise the last hour of a long paper; stamina matters.

Regional exams

When: Before the national exam, with papers from regions across Tanzania

Regional mock exams are set by regions and zones for Form Four candidates. They mirror the format, length, language and difficulty of the CSEE, so they show where you really stand against the national standard. Regional mocks from districts such as Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Morogoro and Kagera are often pitched above school level.

How to use it: Sit it as the real thing: full paper, full time, no notes. Then sort each lost mark into knowledge, reasoning or time.

Work through papers from different regions to meet a wider range of question styles before the CSEE.

NECTA reviews

When: Use alongside every stage

A NECTA review works backwards from the national papers: which topics are examined most often, which question formats recur, how marks are spread across a paper and where students lose marks unnecessarily. It shows where CSEE revision converts into marks.

How to use it: Before a regional mock, read the review for your subject. Then plan revision around the topics and formats that appear most.

Reviews are available in the app with the other exam categories.

Topical exams

When: Any time of year

Topical papers test one chapter completely, such as electrochemistry in Chemistry or algebra in Mathematics. They turn a vague sense of weakness into a specific, fixable gap.

How to use it: Finish a topic in class, then sit its topical paper within a week. Repeat until you can explain the method, not only the answer.

Start topical, then move to the terminal, pre-NECTA and regional mock papers.
