Primary School Exams in Tanzania: Class 1 to Class 7 Papers, Mocks and NECTA Reviews
Practice exams for every primary class, in English and Kiswahili medium: online tests with instant feedback, topical and term exams, mocks, pre-national papers and NECTA reviews. Matched to the new syllabus for Class 1 to 6 and the old syllabus for Class 7.
Primary school curriculum structure: new syllabus for Class 1 to 6, old syllabus for Class 7
Why the exam you choose must match the syllabus your class follows
Primary education in Tanzania now runs on two syllabuses side by side. Class 1 to Class 6 (Darasa la 1 hadi la 6, also called Standard 1 to 6) follow the new syllabus or mtaala mpya, designed by the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE). It is competency-based, so exams ask pupils to apply what they know, not only to repeat it.
Class 7 (Darasa la Saba) still follows the old syllabus. Its pupils sit the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) set by the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) in six subjects. Because the subjects and topics differ between the two syllabuses, a Class 6 paper is not a substitute for a Class 7 paper. Every exam on this page is grouped by class so you pick the right one.
Two syllabuses, one national examination at the end of Class 7.

Good assessment features to look for in practice exams
What makes revision with these exams effective
A practice exam only helps if pupils learn from it. These are the features built into the primary exams here:
Instant feedback. Online exams show pupils how they did straight away, so mistakes are fixed while the topic is still fresh.
Marking schemes and answers. Topical exams come with marking schemes and mock exams come with answers, so pupils learn how marks are awarded and not just what the right answer was.
Syllabus alignment. Questions match what is taught in Tanzanian classrooms for each class, on the new syllabus for Class 1 to 6 and on the old syllabus for Class 7.
Exam-style questions. Papers follow the National exam format and the competence-based approach, with questions that test application as well as recall.
Graded difficulty. Mathematics questions are graded by difficulty to suit each class.
Timed mock sessions. Mock exams simulate real examination conditions, with timed sessions and subject-by-subject feedback.
Progress tracking. Online exams help pupils, parents and teachers see what has improved and what still needs work.
Offline access. Papers can be downloaded, so pupils can revise without using data.
Every core subject. No gaps in preparation, from Reading and Numeracy in Class 1 to Sayansi na Teknolojia in Class 7.

Online exams with instant feedback
Online primary exams let pupils test their understanding whenever they like and get feedback the moment they finish. That short loop is what makes them useful: a pupil who sees a wrong answer straight away is far more likely to fix the gap than one who waits days for a marked paper. They suit daily practice at home, in class or on the go.
Topical exams
Each topical exam covers a single topic and comes with a marking scheme, which makes it the fastest way to revise. They are available for Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Science, Geography and Environment, Social Studies, History of Tanzania and Ethics, Sports and Arts, Civics and Morals, Health Care and Environment, Maarifa ya Jamii and Sanaa na Michezo. Use them straight after a topic is taught, and again a few weeks before an exam.
Term exams
Term exams follow the school year in four categories:
Mid-term one — March
Terminal examination — May
Mid-term two — August
Annual examination — November
Mock exams
Mock exams, also called regional exams, come from schools and regions across Tanzania, so pupils meet a range of question styles. Examples include Class 4 mocks from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, Katavi, Kilosa and Morogoro, and mocks for Class 7. Mocks come with answers (mitihani ya mock na majibu), so pupils can check their solutions and sharpen their answering technique.
Pre-national exams
Pre-national exams are set in the National exam format shortly before the national examination. They are a dress rehearsal for the examination classes, the Class 4 national assessment and the Class 7 PSLE, and they sit between pre-mocks and post-mocks in the revision cycle.
NECTA reviews
NECTA reviews are past national papers with the marking scheme and answers, which show pupils how marks are awarded and what the examiners expect. They are the last stage of preparation for the examination classes. The Class 7 NECTA reviews are listed further down this page.
Language of instruction: Kiswahili and English medium
Choose the exam that matches how your school teaches
Primary schools in Tanzania teach in either Kiswahili or English, and exams are available for both media of instruction. Kiswahili and English also remain school subjects in their own right in every class from Class 3 upwards.
Kiswahili medium. Look for titles such as Hisabati, Sayansi, Jiografia na Mazingira, Historia ya Tanzania na Maadili, Sanaa, Michezo na Utamaduni, and, in Class 6 and 7, Sayansi na Teknolojia, Maarifa ya Jamii and Uraia na Maadili.
English medium. Look for Mathematics, Science, Geography and Environment, Culture, Sports and Art, and, in Class 6 and 7, Science and Technology, Social Studies and Civics and Moral.
The Historia ya Tanzania na Maadili exams are listed under that title in both media. Pick the paper whose language matches the language your pupils are taught and tested in.

Class 7 NECTA examination reviews (PSLE past papers)
NECTA reviews are past national papers set out with the questions, the marking scheme and the answers. Working through them shows pupils how marks are awarded, which question patterns come back year after year, and where their own answering technique loses marks. Use them once the term exams and topical tests are done, and time yourself as you would in the exam room. The official source for national results and examination information is the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA).
