About Form Four
Form Four is the final year of ordinary-level secondary education in Tanzania and the year of the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE). Unlike Forms One to Three, which are transitioning to the new competency-based curriculum, Form Four continues under the previous (old) syllabus. Teaching therefore emphasises systematic coverage of prescribed topics, mastery of examination skills and intensive revision.
Each subject is organised into main topics and sub-topics with specific objectives. Lessons run week by week across the school year; progress is checked through continuous assessment, mid-term and terminal examinations, and finally the national CSEE. Steady revision, past-paper practice and clear understanding of both theory and practical work are essential for success.
Note: Form Four follows the old syllabus. Content summaries below are drawn from the official schemes of work issued by the Office of the Prime Minister (RALG) for the current Form Four year and from TIE student books.

- Probability of combined events
- Application of coordinate geometry and probability in problem-solving
Key competence areas: Apply coordinate geometry in real situations; construct and analyse three-dimensional figures; use probability to solve problems of combined events.

Form Four Physics focuses on waves, sound, light and related electromagnetic phenomena. Learners identify types of waves in nature, explain wave properties and behaviour, study sound production and musical instruments, and apply wave concepts through experiments, ripple tanks, tuning forks and practical demonstrations. The work prepares candidates for both theory and practical papers of CSEE.
Topics and content
- Waves: introduction, types of waves and wave properties
- Sound: production, propagation, characteristics and musical instruments
- Light and related optical phenomena
- Practical investigation of wave behaviour (ripple tanks, resonance, etc.)
- Application of wave principles in everyday and technological contexts
Key competence areas: Identify types of waves in nature; demonstrate understanding of wave concepts; apply knowledge of sound and related phenomena.

Chemistry — Form Four (Kemia)
Form Four Chemistry centres on non-metals and their compounds, carbon and organic chemistry. Learners explain the oxidising properties of non-metals, study general chemical properties of non-metals, identify forms of carbon in minerals and naturally occurring matter, prepare carbon dioxide, and explore the chemistry of carbon compounds. Wall charts, laboratory preparation and equation writing support understanding.
Topics and content
- Non-metals and their compounds: general chemical properties
- Oxidising properties of non-metals
- Carbon: forms in which carbon exists (diamond, graphite, coal, etc.)
- Preparation and uses of carbon dioxide
- Organic chemistry and carbon compounds
Key competence areas: Demonstrate understanding of the properties of non-metals; identify carbon in minerals and naturally occurring matter; apply knowledge of carbon chemistry.

Biology — Form Four (Baiolojia)
Form Four Biology covers growth, seed germination, genetics, evolution and ecological relationships. Learners explain the concept of growth, outline changes during seed germination (epigeal and hypogeal), investigate conditions necessary for germination, and study inheritance, variation and the principles of evolution. Experiments, observation of seedlings and data recording prepare students for practical and theory papers.
Topics and content
- Growth: concept of growth in living organisms
- Seed germination: concept, changes during germination, epigeal and hypogeal germination
- Conditions necessary for seed germination (experiments)
- Genetics, inheritance and variation
- Evolution and ecological relationships
Key competence areas: Measure and explain growth in living organisms; investigate seed germination; apply genetic and evolutionary concepts.

Geography — Form Four (Jiografia)
Form Four Geography develops research skills and deepens understanding of population, climate and development issues. Learners explain the meaning and importance of research, describe the characteristics of human population (size, structure, composition, sex ratio, dependency ratio), analyse population change using birth, death and migration data, and examine geographic factors affecting development.
Topics and content
- Introduction to research: meaning and importance of research
- Population: concept, characteristics (size, structure, composition, sex ratio, dependency ratio)
- Population change: birth rate, death rate and migration
- Climate and environmental issues
- Geographic factors in development and resource management
Key competence areas: Explain the importance of research; describe and analyse human population; apply geographic knowledge to development issues.
